How it all started

My name is Josie Vilayvanh and I’ve been a licensed hair stylist for 8 years, a 3 time prestige Canadian Award Winner, as well as having been internationally published. I've been a salon owner now for 6 months. My career took off while I was 8 months pregnant almost 4 years ago with my son Rory.

After deciding to open an Instagram account, on the day I went on maternity leave, I posted a picture of my client’s hair colour that began my entire Hairology journey. I started doing hair on our 8x8 front porch, rotating clients in between Rory's feeding and naps to maintain and rebuild my clientele. After finishing maternity leave, I decided to work in an upscale salon downtown when I shortly realized that I had enough clientele to build a salon of my own. I began by renting several small spaces, upgrading in size while I slowly started to build a team of stylists. During that time, I was also flying in and out of Winnipeg to educate other stylists and salons.

In the fall of 2016, after our trip back from Southern California, my fiancé recommended that we check out a building that was for lease. At the time, I honestly didn't know going to see it before hand that it would be our new home.  Our current location in Winnipeg, Manitoba is an upgrade from my porch days rinsing my clients under my kitchen sink, to a 1,200 square foot space that is made up of 7 Top Notch Stylists. Switching from a commission based stylist to a Salon owner was the best decision I have ever made.

As with any journey, I went through a lot of learning experiences, some failed, but some great, which has led me to where I am today. I am happy to be able to go to work and be surrounded by my talented and amazing team. I am a strong believer that our industry is full of endless education and room for growth, and if it's in your heart to be the best stylist you can be there's nothing that could ever stop you from being just that.
